Apple’s global price reduction for the iPad Air 2 is now effective in the Apple online store in Malaysia, with the tablet now available from RM1,699.
At the launch of the 9.7-inch iPad Pro, Apple also annouced a $100 price drop for the iPad Air 2 (about RM405). The Malaysian price drop doesn’t directly reflect this, with the majority of reduction averaging only RM300.
On top of that, Apple has also removed the 128GB option for the iPad Air 2. The new prices are listed below, with the old RRP in parantheses:
iPad Air 2 16GB WiFi: RM1,699 (RM1,999)
iPad AIr 2 64GB WiFi: RM2,099 (RM2,399)
iPad Air 2 16GB WiFi + Cellular: RM2,199 (2,499)
iPad Air 2 64GB WiFi + Cellular: RM2,599 (RM2,899)
These new prices are largely similar to the pre-GST prices of the iPad Air 2. That said, the new price reduction does make this tablet a little more appealing, especially considering the 9.7 iPad Pro is still unavailable in Malaysia (and when it does arrive, it will likely be priced on a higher pricing tier).
Apple Lowers Prices of Macs in Malaysia; As Much as RM1,600 Price Drop
Not only is the new 12-inch MacBook available for purchase now, the Cupertino company has also lowered the prices of all Mac machines in Malaysia. These include the MacBook Air, the MacBook Pro, and of course, even the new 12-inch MacBook.
These price drops vary from one Mac machine to the other; some products receive only RM200 reduction in price, while others got a whopping RM1,600 price cut. For the sake of comparison (and clarity), we’ve come up with a table reflecting these price changes.
Other than these reduction in retail prices, we notice that the MacBook Air also received a slight update. Previously, the base model only comes with 4GB of RAM, but Apple seems to have changed this: all variants of the MacBook Air now ship with 8GB of RAM.
Looking back at the table above, these price drops are not as drastic as some would’ve hoped; the retail prices before the October 2015 price hike were still lower. That said, it’s good to see that Apple is adjusting the prices of its Mac products in Malaysia to reflect the current exchange rate of our currency.
If you’re planning to get yourself a new Mac machine, perhaps now is the best time to get it. Then again, Apple may have a few surprises in store in WWDC 2016, which is set to take place from the 13th of June 2016.
Apple Reduces Prices of iMac in Malaysia as Well; Down as Much as RM700
It looks like not only did Apple reduce the price of its MacBooks (MacBook, MacBook Air, MacBook Pro), Mac Pro and Mac Mini in Malaysia, its all-in-one desktop computer, the iMac, also received a price cut. The 21.5” and 27” iMacs in Malaysia are now up to RM700 cheaper than before.
The price drop for the new iMacs in Malaysia ranges from RM350 to RM700 depending on the model you pick. Here’s a table to show the price differences.
Unlike the MacBook Air, the iMac only received a price cut. Apple did not give any upgrade in terms of hardware, but this is understandable as the iMac offered are still pretty new.
While the new iMac may seem a lot cheaper now, do note that back in October 2015, Apple announced new iMacs that were a whole lot more expensive than before. Before the October event, the cheapest iMac started from only RM4,199.
iPhone 5s & 2015 12-inch MacBook Now Retail from RM1,299 & RM4,599 Respectively
It appears official Apple resellers in Malaysia have reduced the prices of the iPhone 5s and last year’s 12-inch MacBook. This isn’t all that surprising, considering the fact that the iPhone SE will be arriving in Malaysia on 13 May; the 12-inch MacBook was also recently refreshed with Intel Skylake processors.
Now that the iPhone 5s have received a whopping RM900 price cut (it originally retails from RM2,199), it is by far the most affordable iPhone to date in Malaysia, although this is merely a promotional price – presumably to clear out stocks. Of course, RM1,299 only gets you the 16GB model; the more practical 32GB iPhone 5s didn’t get the same price cut, seeing how it still retails at RM2,449 on Machines’ online store.
Other than the iPhone 5s, the 2015 12-inch MacBook has received a price cut as well. Originally retailing at RM5,899 before the recent price revision, this MacBook now retail from RM4,599; the 512GB model is priced at RM5,899 instead. Not only is this a very welcome price change, the 12-inch MacBook is now even more affordable than when it was first introduced in Malaysia for RM4,769.
At the time of this writing, both Machines and Switch no longer have the iPhone 5s in stock online. That said, these retailers may still have the device stocked in their retail stores, although we have a feeling it won’t be for long. As for the 2015 12-inch MacBook, both the 256GB and 512GB variants are still available for purchase online.
