KUALA LUMPUR, June 3 – Come Jan 1 next year, all traders and hawkers in the Federal Territories (FT) must use biodegradable materials to replace plastic and polystyrene packaging.

FT Minister Datuk Seri Tengku Adnan Tengku Mansor said the ministry was now in the midst of drafting its Biodegradable Products Usage by-laws to support the move and outlined four phases in implementing the Biodegradable Products Usage Policy in the Federal Territories, with the first phase involving all the traders at the Raja Bot market beginning this month.

“The second phase will be implemented in August involving night market hawkers, restaurants, and ‘Food Truck’ operators, requiring them to use food containers, cups and bags made of biodegradable materials,” he told reporters after launching the Biodegradable Products Usage initiative at Pasar Raja Bot, here today.
