Woman robbed on Uber ride

SERDANG: A pregnant sales assistant who booked an Uber ride after work was robbed at knifepoint by the driver’s accomplice.

What was supposed to be a 30-minute drive from Mid Valley to Puchong turned into an hour-long terror ride for 26-year-old Wong Mei Yan.

Recounting her experience, Wong said she left work early as she was feeling unwell.

“My ride arrived around 9.30pm. I only took note of the car’s registration plate and did not notice the driver’s low-star ranking or the man in the front passenger seat,” Wong said. But she did notice that the car had tinted windows and a foul cigarette smell.

She said she only realised there was another passenger, whom she described as “small and thin”, in the front seat when the driver started chatting with him.

“It was hard to hear them because they also had the radio on loudly,” she said.

Wong said she did not speak to the driver until she realised that he had taken a different route despite being given directions.

Somewhere near the One Puchong Business Centre, the front passenger turned around holding a knife and told her to hand over her valuables.

“I became frightened and started crying and begged them not to hurt me because I’m pregnant,” she said.

After Wong was robbed, the driver kept on driving until he reached Koi Kinrara, about five kilometres away, where he dropped her off in the middle of the road at 10.20pm.

Wong waved down passers-by and it was sales executive Eddy Ong who came to her aid. He took her to a police station to report the robbery.

Ong related Wong’s harrowing experience on social media which went viral.

When contacted, Serdang deputy OCPD Supt Lee Wai Leong said police were investigating the case.

“We have gathered information on the duo and we are tracing them,” he said.

Uber said it could not comment on the incident as investigations were ongoing.

“We are cooperating with the authorities and would like to assure the public that Uber takes safety very seriously,” it said in a statement.

She only noticed a “small thin man” when the driver started talking to him.

Wong claimed that she did not speak to the driver until he started going the wrong direction despite her giving directions.

Uber driver flashes, then takes selfie on woman’s phone

GEORGE TOWN: Police have arrested a Vietnamese woman who was the victim of a Uber driver who allegedly flashed his private parts at her.

She is being investigated for beating him up with a few other men.

Northeast district police chief ACP Anuar Omar said the 43-year-old woman was brought to the Patani Road police station at noon. He declined to comment further.

It was reported yesterday that the Uber driver was arrested after flashing his private parts at a woman passenger.

A group of men later assaulted the Uber driver.

This morning, police remanded the 29-year-old Uber driver, who was seen crying, and three other men for a week at the Magistrate’s Court here.

The other men were believed involved in beating up the Uber driver. A video recording of the incident was spread on WhatsApp.

Police investigators said yesterday this was the second time the woman was meeting the man.

She first hailed the Uber service outside her home in Air Itam to go to George Town on Tuesday at 4pm.

During the trip, she told investigators the driver showed her his genitals and ordered her to touch it.

She told investigators she held the penis of the man “for a second” and let it go.

The Uber driver also took a selfie on the woman’s phone right after.

According to the woman, the Uber driver then harassed her by repeatedly calling her at night.

The woman then called her friends for help. They in turn advised her to inform her husband.

Yesterday, the 37-year-old husband and his Vietnamese wife allegedly called up the Uber driver to meet up.

As soon as the driver arrived in his Proton Saga, he was allegedly kicked and beaten up by a group of men armed with baseball bats.

The Uber driver told police he was innocent and had been slandered by the Vietnamese women.

A urine test on the driver was negative for drug use and he did not have any previous criminal conviction.

The Uber driver is being investigated for assaulting or using criminal force on a person with intent to outrage the modesty of the woman.

The woman, her husband and friends are being investigated for possession of weapons during a riot.

STATEMENT FROM GRAB

By Sean Goh, Country Head of Grab Malaysia

Grab: We regret that there has been an incident reported on 11 June where a GrabCar driver had allegedly sexually assaulted a passenger. The news is deeply distressing and our priority now is to assist and provide support to the passenger and her family, as well as fully cooperate with the police and relevant authorities. The police investigation is ongoing, and we will not be able to share further details of this case. We have a zero tolerance policy to any crime and serious misconduct by drivers, and have immediately removed the driver from our platform, pending completion of police investigations.

The safety of both our passengers and drivers is, and always will be, a priority for Grab. I am truly sorry that we have let down our users and community in this instance, and humbly ask our passengers and drivers to please allow us to keep improving the safety and reliability of our service.

We have in place rigorous face-to-face driver screening and criminal background checks - and we are committed to keep investing in driver screenings and training, and other safety initiatives. The Grab driver app currently has a PDRM ‘panic button’ for drivers to immediately contact the police in emergency cases. We will be expediting our plans to extend this feature to the Grab passenger app as well.

Uber, Grab open to having ‘SOS button’ on apps

Determined to improve safety, ride-hailing operators are encouraging their drivers and passengers to provide feedback to further improve their systems.

PETALING JAYA: Ride-hailing operators Uber and Grab have given an assurance that they will work with the authorities to review and improve their safety features, including an idea to include an SOS button in their apps.

Grab Malaysia’s country head Sean Goh said the company is committed to cooperate with the government to ensure that Grab rides are safe.

“We have made much headway in safety, and based on a survey among our passengers, eight out of 10 female passengers feel safer since Grab was introduced,” he said.

He added that regional statistics indicate that the company has reduced traffic accidents in Malaysia by six times.

Grab is currently looking at using telematics and in-phone accelerometers to monitor driver’s speed and driving patterns, while reducing unsafe habits like sudden braking and lane-changing, he said.

Uber’s communications head Leigh Wong told FMT that they are currently reviewing their safety measures both in terms of technology as well as process.

“We will also be getting feedback directly from riders, driver-partners and other relevant stakeholders to further improve our systems and processes,” he said.

Yesterday, The Star reported that the Land Public Transport Commission (SPAD) will soon require ride-hailing operators to include an SOS button in their apps.

SPAD chief executive Mohd Azharuddin Mat Sah was quoted as saying that the requirement would be made mandatory for both Grab and Uber.

However, he said there were no deadlines set for the implementation of this feature and discussions need to be held with the police on the matter.

SPAD has also requested for e-hailing operators to provide information about their drivers by June 16.

This comes after a spate of criminal incidents involving ride-sharing services over the past three weeks.

On May 21 a pregnant passenger was allegedly robbed by a Uber driver and his accomplice, causing her to suffer trauma and emotional stress that led to a miscarriage six days later.

Wong Mei Yan, 26, was reportedly robbed at knifepoint while taking a ride from Mid Valley to Puchong.

Another Uber driver in Selangor was arrested for investigation into the robbery of two teenagers, after he allegedly drove them elsewhere from their intended destination and left them stranded in Kajang last Sunday.

In a separate incident, a 42-year-old Vietnamese woman passenger claimed she was “ordered” to touch her Uber driver’s genitals after he flashed her during the ride in Penang on June 6.

College students dumped by Uber driver in Cheras, then robbed and assaulted

KUALA LUMPUR: Two private college students who had just returned from a nightclub in the city were robbed by motorcyclists, shortly after their Uber driver dropped them off at Taman Murni Batu 9 in Cheras.

The students, both 24, said they had booked a trip using the ride-sharing app from Jalan Ampang to Cheras Perdana about 3.30am on Sunday.

As they entered the Perodua Alza, the victims claimed that the Uber driver had grabbed one of their mobile phones and changed the destination to Taman Murni Batu 9, not their original destination.

The students claimed that when they reached the location, they were left by the roadside.

Two men on a motorcycle then pulled up. The victims claimed that they were duped into thinking that they were about to get a lift.

They were instead taken in turns to a secluded spot where they were bashed with helmets and mugged.

It was learnt that one of the victims received six stitches on his lips while another received stitches near his eyes.

The victims lost their mobile phones, watch, car key and cash.

The incident was related by a Facebook user, Christine Juliana Danker, said to be the mother of one of the victims.

She cautioned other Uber users on the possible dangers involved.

The victims, she said, eventually found their way home.

Meanwhile, Kajang police chief Assistant Commissioner Othman Nanyan said an investigation paper has been opened.

The case is being investigated under Section 394 of the Penal Code for causing hurt in committing robbery.

“Police are in the midst of tracking down the men involved,” he said.

Uber driver linked to college student robbery, nabbed

SHAH ALAM: The Uber driver who dumped two college students at Taman Murni Batu 9 in Cheras was arrested on Tuesday.

Selangor police chief Datuk Seri Abdul Samah Mat said the 31-year-old Uber driver was nabbed in Kajang town around midnight on the same day.

Samah said the man was subsequently remanded for two days to be investigated for robbery,

as he was believed to be in cahoots with two motorcyclists, who had robbed the college students after dropping them at the spot.

Samah also said that they had obtained information on the duo from the Uber driver and are in the midst of tracking them down.

"The man has a day job and started driving Uber on a part time basis recently. We believe he and the duo are accomplices. We are trying to establish if they had robbed other victims using the same modus operandi.

“We have obtained a lot of information on the duo through the Uber driver and are hunting them down,” Samah added.

On early Sunday morning, the college students had booked the Uber driver to pick them from a night club in the city to Cheras Perdana.

However, upon entering the Perodua Alza, they claimed that the Uber driver had grabbed one of their mobile phones and changed their destination to Taman Murni Batu 9 instead.

They alleged that they were left by the roadside and two motorcyclists approached them on the pretext of giving them a lift.

However, the victims were instead taken by turns to a secluded spot where they were assaulted with helmets and robbed of their mobile phones, watch, car keys and cash.

Samah was met after witnessing the handing over of duties ceremony from his deputy Datuk Mohd Fuad Abd Latiff to Datuk Ab Rashid Ab Wahab at the Selangor police contingent headquarters, here, today.

Fuad retires effective tomorrow after 39-years in the force.

Ab Rashid was previously the Perlis CPO.
